Build Your Practice
Introduction
Build Your Practice is a hands-on workshop series designed to support learning specialists, educational therapists, tutors, and other providers of 1-1 direct learning services in developing and professionalizing their solo or group practices. Whether you have one client or fifteen, join us to build your practice!
Session 3: Money Matters
In Module 3, you’ll receive financial resources to set or re-evaluate fee structures, create a plan for taxes and business expenses, and determine ways to budget for professional development. You’ll learn about ways to structure part-time and full-time salary and benefits when self-employed. While this module doesn’t provide tax or financial advice, you will be able to refine your potential questions for CPAs and financial planners.
Session 1: Business Essentials
In the Business Essentials module, you will customize a checklist for your practice’s essential business functions and priortize next steps. You will create a do-able timeline to take your practice forward in the direction that most interests you and suits your unique professional needs and preferences.
Session 4: Targeted Growth
Finally, this module will provide support as you evaluate your areas of expertise and focus, create a plan to generate the tyoes of referrals you most want, and develop your ability to communicate effectively with clients and families around their growth and changing needs in order to increase retention where appropriate. You will also explore the role of full-time practice and evaluate your preferred work schedule, location, and approach.
Session 2: Policies & Procedures
In this module, you’ll receive sample policies and procedures and obtain support to adapt them to reflect your values and priorities as a provider. You will work through the realities of implementing these practices, settiing up email templates and website language to support your growth and success.
What You’ll Get
You will leave Build Your Practice with a complete toolkit you can use to continue to refine your professional practice over the next 1-5 years and beyond. You will receive templates, checklists, planners, and sample wording for practice policies, emails, and other situations requiring professional communication. You will also receive hand-on practice addressing complex ethical and business situations and learn ways to handle them effectively.

Kate founded UpNext Learning in 2015 as a part-time private practice focusing on supporting students with LD, ADHD, NVLD, and/or ASD in thriving academically and personally. Between 2015-2020, the practice continued to focus on supporting students with executive functioning challenges, especially in writing. In 2020, Kate transitioned to working full-time in private practice, and in 2021 created a group practice model by adding four providers who also specialize in supporting students with EF, writing, and the academic effects of comorbidities such as anxiety and OCD. Kate has written on and been interviewed on educational issues in The New York Times and NPR, and has presented professional development programs for 20-800 participants at many New York City independent schools, the University of Michigan, Case Western Reserve University, Howard University, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Yale University, and for corporate clients including TIAA.
