MATH & SCIENCE

Math and science support fits into my practice differently depending on the age and needs of the student. 

Science

In the context of working with students on executive functioning skills, I support lab report writing through 12th grade, and can help students directly with science work through 8th grade.

Math

Through 6th grade, I work with any aspect of a child’s math skills, including assessing strengths and challenges, and remediating any gaps in instruction. I have supported a variety of inquiry-based math approaches, as well as Singapore Math. 

In 7th grade and above, I do not assess skills, unless students are practicing skills from prior years. However, in the context of working with students on executive functioning skills, I do frequently work with older students on developing their approach to math: Reading problems thoroughly, implementing a problem-solving strategy, recording their work accurately, and self-checking. 

For math or science tutoring that doesn’t relate to executive functioning or academic support needs, I refer clients to colleagues who specialize in math or science instruction.
